Why This Set Matters
If 1966 Donruss was the first Marvel card set, 1990 Impel Marvel Universe is the one that defined the category. With 162 cards, multiple subsets, and five holograms, it rewrote the rules.
Card #161 is one of the most famous non-sport cards ever printed: a portrait/tribute to Stan Lee. Especially significant since Lee's passing in 2018.
Twelve cards feature Spider-Man conducting humorous interviews with other characters — the most creative format innovation in vintage Marvel card history.
The five hologram chase cards were a marketing revolution — inserted roughly one per box, featuring Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Ghost Rider.
The six-card 'Rookies' subset featured Cable, Gambit, Jubilee, Strong Guy, Archangel, and others. Gambit's Impel rookie card is one of the most discussed vintage Marvel cards ever.
With over 132,000 cards graded by PSA, Impel Marvel Universe is by far the most submitted vintage Marvel set. The gem rate sits at 15.84%% — respectable for a mass-produced 1990 set, but lower than the 1975 Topps (23.6%%) due to sheer volume of submissions. The hologram inserts command the highest prices.
Deep Dive
The 1990 Impel Marvel Universe Series I is the most important Marvel card set ever produced — not because of its contents alone, but because of what it did to the hobby. Before 1990, Marvel cards were a niche interest. After 1990, they were a phenomenon. The Impel set was the catalyst.
The product's genius was in its comprehensiveness and its seriousness of purpose. With 162 cards organized into Heroes, Villains, Rookies, Famous Battles, Teams, Most Valuable Comics, and Spider-Man Presents subsets, Impel treated the Marvel Universe as a complete world deserving of complete documentation.
Gamebit and Cable's rookie cards remain the set's most commercially significant cards. Both characters had debuted within the previous year, and both would go on to become defining Marvel characters of the decade.
