How We Classify Cards
Understanding the tags and designations used across this database

Tag Definitions

True Rookie

A card or sticker collectible from the first year in which a character appeared on any trading card or sticker product anywhere in the world, regardless of language or country of origin. If a character first appeared on a 1975 Spanish sticker and also appeared on a 1975 English sticker, both receive the True Rookie designation — the tag applies to the year, not a single card.

First Solo

The first appearance on a card or sticker where it is only that character pictured, or the card is specifically named for that character. Many characters first appear in group shots or as secondary figures on another character’s card — their First Solo marks the first time they received their own dedicated card.

First English

The first appearance on an English-language card or sticker, when the character’s True Rookie was in a non-English product (Spanish, French, German, etc.). This tag only appears when the True Rookie predates the English card by at least one year — if both appeared in the same year, the English card receives True Rookie instead.

First Card

A card appearance after the character’s True Rookie year — not the first ever, but a subsequent documented appearance. Used to track a character’s card history across multiple sets and years.

First Marvel

Used for characters who originated outside the Marvel Universe (Dracula, Hercules, Frankenstein’s Monster, King Arthur, etc.) and are appearing on a Marvel-branded card product. Their “first card” in the broader sense predates Marvel, but this marks their first appearance in a Marvel context.

Unconfirmed Rookie

A card where the character appears but their status as a “first appearance” is debated or uncertain. The most notable examples are Human Torch on 1966 Donruss card #34 (where he appears alongside Spider-Man but the card is catalogued as a Spider-Man card) and Loki on card #61 (a Thor card where Loki appears as a secondary figure).

Composite Tags

Cards can carry multiple tags simultaneously. For example, a card might be tagged True Rookie First English First Solo if it is from the character’s first year on any card, is also their first English-language card, and is their first solo appearance — all on the same card.
